Historical Background: Health Promotion
Committees (HPC) were established in 1999 as part of a project
funded by the California Department of Education, the High School
Tobacco Use
Prevention Education state grant (TUPE), the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities
state grant, and CDC Local HIV Prevention.
What is the goal of the High School Health Promotion
Committee?
The goal of the Health Promotion Committee is to increase the
increase critical mass, create conduit and effectiveness of comprehensive
and coordinated health programs at the high school level.
What is a Health Promotion Committee?
The HPC includes adult and student coordinators who focus on
the promotion of health awareness. All adult HPC Coordinator
roles (described below) are based on professional development,
policy, health awareness, educational programs and administrative
duties.
- Health Liaison Coordinator (HLC): Coordinates
activities including health education curriculum promotion,
Substance Use Prevention, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Nutrition and
Physical Activity Promotion, health education theatre presentations,
and Positive Alternatives trips. The HLC also supports
the implementation of health education for the general student
population.
- LGBTQ Support Liaisons (LSL): Coordinates
safe school activities including Gay Pride Celebration, Violence
Prevention, Diversity Awareness, Gay/Straight Alliance, and
the Diversity Club. The SMYL also provides drop-in sessions
for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth
and promotes District Diversity Curriculum.
- Tobacco Youth Outreach Coordinator (TYOC): Coordinates
activities, with the assistance of Youth Outreach Workers,
including tobacco prevention, implementation of Tobacco Referral/Citation
procedure, and monthly mandatory Smokeless School Days sessions. The
TYOC also coordinates an 8-week voluntary Smoking Cessation
Program with the American Lung Association. [This
position does not exist at Wellness Program sites where the
Nurse provides these services]
- Youth Outreach Coordinator (YOC): Focuses
on the involvement of youth in the promotion of health awareness
events and activities. The YOC coordinates and mentors
a team of Youth Outreach Workers (YOWs) who are responsible
for promoting Wellness services and ensuring youth voice and
participation in health awareness activities. [This
position exists at Wellness Program sites]
- Youth Outreach
Worker (YOW): Focuses on ensuring youth
voice and involvement in the planning and implementation of
health-related programs. The YOW works with a team of
peers to publicize and strengthen the quality of the health
and wellness services, including tobacco prevention education
on campus.
