What do Harvest of the Month and Rosa Park kindergartners have in common? Apples!
The kindergartners have been busy measuring the height, weight and circumference (the distance around the edge of a circle) of red, yellow and green apples using non standard measurements; they’ve observed and recorded that their apples were from three to four cubes tall, weighed as much as 16 wooden cubes, and were as long around as a seven-inch piece of yarn.
Do apples float or sink? Most of the kindergarten ers predicted that the apples would sink because, “They are heavy.” After doing the float/sink test, they were surprised to observe that all the apples floated. Why? “Because the apples are light” and “because there’s air in it” and “it’s not so dense.” What scientists! They also tested other fruits like oranges (which floated) and plumcots (which sank.) “The plum is dense,” interjected a kindergartner.

Another fun activity was the taste test. After tasting yellow Golden Delicious, red Washington Delicious and green Granny Smith apples, they voted and the survey showed that more students liked the green apple because, “It’s sweet, sour, crunchy and juicy.” The yellow apple was the third choice because; it was a little too ripe.
As their culminating activity, the kindergarten ers made an apple stamping pattern with red, yellow and green paint and put together a paper apple quilt.
Ask the kindergarten ers in Room 108: “Who is Johnny Appleseed? What are the parts of an apple tree? How does an apple tree look in autumn, winter, spring and summer? What recipes can you make with apples that are good and healthy to eat?” The experts know all the answers to these questions.
