Spring EXPO
On March 12 and 13, 2008, the San Francisco Unified School District hosted its first School Support & Community Programs Spring EXPO. Thank you to all the Community Based Organizations who attended.
BACKGROUND: There are more than 250 community-based organizations (CBOs) interested in working with students in SFUSD. Schools are interested in collaborating but may need a way to manage the volume of requests and coordinate their needs with organizational capacity. With over 100 schools, CBOs and other city agencies would benefit from an organized process for recruiting collaborating schools.
OBJECTIVE: Create an efficient and effective process for facilitating collaborations that accomplishes the following:
- Provides specific times and a process for city-sponsored and community-based programs and services and schools to learn about services and school needs
- Provides a planning horizon for schools to consider their needs and concentrates the time they spend in recruitment and/or being recruited
- Provides opportunities community/city programs to outreach to school community and showcase their programs and services
- Ensures that CBO and City agencies have knowledge of the process and procedures for accessing schools/students/parents
- Facilitates collaboration and helps match school needs with quality services and programs
VISION: Tri-annual “program expo” that highlights our community and city programs and allows schools to meet and shop for programs and services to support their school community.
DESIGN: SFUSD publishes a call for expo participation. City programs and CBOs with potential programs and services for schools register and provide program/service information. SFUSD creates a “catalog” containing information on the programs and services for schools to review with their executive teams and/or school communities.
DAY ONE: SFUSD meets with CBOs to orient them to the process of working with SFUSD and clearly articulate accountability expectations (e.g., fingerprinting/background checks, outcome measures/evaluation, etc). If CBO program staff have not participated in an SFUSD CBO orientation, this training will be offered later that day. Set-up time provided for organizations and programs.
DAY TWO: Expo held where CBOs have an opportunity to share information about their program(s) and schools can “shop” for programs and services.
Morning (9-noon): Expo held for Secondary Schools
Afternoon (2 – 5): Expo held for Elementary Schools
Schools will submit requests for programs and services and matches will be made giving priority to existing programs/collaborations and school need.
Expos will occur two times a year:
- March (Main Expo): for programs for the summer, year-round programs and/or pilot or large-scale programs for the following fall
- November (Orientation/Spring Program Expo): for programs that want to either start programs or expand their program in the Spring and for schools that identified new issues/needs. Also orientation provided for new program staff and/or if refresher needed on alignment with District goals.
This will be the main way for outside programs and services to gain access to our schools.
