Overview

SFUSD is pleased to present a new Organizational Framework for the Student Support Services Department (SSSD). With this new approach to aligning and improving our work, SFUSD Student Support Services Department is better prepared to achieve the goals of the Strategic Plan and Balanced Scorecard.

The mission of SFUSD Student Support Services Department is to ensure a coordinated system of supports and resources that, in partnership with family and communities, foster safe and caring learning environments where all students flourish.

We are proud of SSSD’s many documented outcomes in supporting youth and families, building school capacity, and helping to achieve district-wide academic goals. However, we recognize that we must do much more to accomplish the district’s strategic plan goals.  SSSD specifically seeks to achieve increased student attendance, increased student achievement, and increased pro-social student behaviors so that all students can become high achieving and joyful learners.

Goals

SFUSD Student Support Services Department (SSSD) is committed to achieving three goals aligned with the district’s strategic plan:

• Increase student attendance
• Increase student achievement
• Increase pro-social student behaviors

 

New Framework

At the school-site level, all school-based SSSD staff work to create a positive learning environment, build student knowledge and staff capacity, engage families, and identify and serve students in need. Collaborative teams such as the Student Assistance Program, Student Success Teams, and Student Attendance Review Teams bring these staff together. At the district level, we have created new structures to foster this shared responsibility.

Impact of the New SSSD Framework:  What Has Not Changed

• Our services and programs for children, youth, and families all remain in place.
• Our direct services staff remain within the Student Support Services department.
• Our partnerships with hundreds of CBOs, city-county agencies, and others have been reinforced.
  

Impact of the New SSSD Framework:  What Has Changed

• Eleven existing departments have been merged into three focal areas:
  
  Prevention and Intervention
  Offers a variety of prevention and intervention programs and services including various research based health and wellness programs and professional development.

  Counseling and Social Services
  In an effort to support the academic and socio-emotional needs of our students, this focus aims to enhance professional development and support for our on-site student support service staff. Learn more about Couseling and Social Services.
  
  Families, Community & Partnerships
  Assists the school sites in supporting students learning during the out of school time hours and access to multi-lingual communication through our translation office.

  Each focal area has shared responsibility for our comprehensive services, both at the school-site level and at the district level.  Learn more about the SSSD Focal Areas.
• Support and Accountability resources are now provided and shared department-wide.
• Director level position oversees the Counseling and Social Services focal area.
• By increased collaboration and coordination of the management team the response and follow-up to school sites is more rapid and effective.
• Staff participates in all-staff meetings, job-alike meetings, advisories to enhance professional development, and opportunities to share information and collaborate.
• Each SSSD staff member has a stronger understanding of how his or her work contributes to the district’s strategic plan goals and the SSS Department objectives.
